ARS ELECTRONICA
in the KNOWLEDGE CAPITAL Vol.05

FREE SOUND

Sound is a unique phenomenon. It flows like air and it disappears somewhere.
Humans have invented media such as records and musical notes in order to capture such sounds.
How can artists engage with sound today, when people can walk through cities with constant access to sound via their personal media players?anytime and anywhere?
In the Knowledge Capital Lab., , the FREE SOUND exhibition will show work by Christina Kubisch, a Berlin- based pioneer in the field of sound art, and Ei Wada, an artist known for transforming old sound devices like open reel tapes and Cathode Ray Tube TVs into new sound media.
This exhibition will introduce the audience to new artistic sound experiences through a soundscape installation, listening with special headphones and a kinetic sound sculpture that generates organic patterns with analog recording tape ? using outdated technology in the age of freely flowing digital sound throughout the world.

Participating artists

Christina Kubisch

Christina Kubisch belongs to the first generation of sound artists. Trained as a composer, she has artistically developed such techniques as magnetic induction to realize her sound installations. Since 1986 she has added light as an artistic element to her work with sound. Christina Kubisch’s work displays an artistic development which is often described as the “synthesis of arts” ? the discovery of acoustic space and the dimension of time in the visual arts on one hand, and a redefinition of relationships between material and form in music on the other.
