  • Blog Liguria - Summer is magic…and free!
During the Summer season, Liguria has so much to offer that being bored is impossible.
What is great about shows and events organized during June, July and August is that most of them are completely free of charge.
You can find something for all tastes and all ages: concerts, Summer carnival parades, air shows, fireworks, outdoor cinema, puppet shows and much more.

Cinema on the beach

The Summer Carnival Parade is an amazing event with music, floats and costumes which takes place in many towns around Liguria during the month of July.
The floats are usually ‘recycled’ from the February carnival. It’s an explosion of confetti, colors and music and the only changes compared to the Winter carnival are that the parade takes place at night (due to the high temperatures during the day in July) and therefore the costumes are different to adapt to the season giving way to Hawaiian dancer costumes and Brazilian inspired outfits.
The floats are prepared and presented by sponsors which can be local businesses or regional cultural associations.

Another free event which tours Italy, especially in the Summer is The Frecce Tricolori show.
It is perhaps one of the most awaited and most famous in all of Italy and the world, a national pride that everyone envies us, together with our wonderful military vessel, the ‘Amerigo Vespucci,’ one of the most beautiful boats in the world.
Seeing the planes darting gracefully in the sky while they form their most beautiful figures is always a great emotion, to experience at least once in a lifetime.
The Frecce Tricolori are the National Acrobatic Patrol of the Italian Air Force. It was founded in 1961, following the decision of the Air Force to create a permanent group dedicated to the collective aerobatic training of its pilots. Today the show involves 10 aircraft, of which 9 in formation and one solo, and are the largest aerobatic team in the world. The rich flight program, with 18 figures and lasting almost half an hour, has also made it the most famous aerobatic team in the world, recognized worldwide as the best national aerobatic team.
In Genoa the Amerigo Vespucci boat is always present when the planes are doing their show and fireworks are shot around the vessel. A double show, both in the air and on water.

During the Summer period, most movie theaters close their doors for the holidays. Italians indeed do not love air conditioning and staying indoors when the weather is nice therefore they prefer watching films at the beach or at parks.
In and around Genoa, many outdoor cinemas are set up during the hotter months. Many viewings are free of charge, especially the ones at the beach or at public parks. You just bring a towel and some snacks if you would like and watch the show with friends and family based on a first-come-first-served service. Come early and get a good spot basically. You can even bring a bottle of wine since it is totally legal to drink alcohol outside in Italy but perhaps it is better to use a different container as glass is not allowed on the beach for obvious safety reasons.
The films shown are normally fairly new films which had come out in the previous months or classic animation films for children.

Light shows are popular in the Summer

Worth noting are also concerts, in particular classic music ones, held at beautiful locations such as castles and 19th century villas which are normally kept locked and inaccessible during the Winter months.
The atmosphere given by the live music, the starry skies, the Summer breeze and the amazing beauty of the locations is just something to look forward to Summer after Summer.
Are there any free events open to anyone in Japan?
