“How do other people see the same scenery that I’m seeing? The angle of view and height are of course different for each person. So does the scenery itself appear different? Am I the only one who can see that sign?” What will happen if we overlap what we ourselves see and what others see? How does the view appear? That was the theme of this work.

I have described it in this work as a neutral position.

I’m delighted to have received this award. Living in Okinawa, I felt that there was too little awareness of the problems arising from the US military bases there, and that is why I produced this work. I hope it will make people think more about the military base problems.

This app was created by only two people. While it was under development, anyone near our desks would probably have heard random comments like "I'm sleepy," "I'm tired," "I'm wiped out," or "I need to go home." The atmosphere was either euphoria or dysphoria. Everyone should try developing an app sometime.

"Japanese Park Project"

Deployment of location-based apps in outdoor spaces can be difficult, especially in gardens with varied terrain that can obstruct Wi-Fi signals. Additionally, signage alerting users to these services can be problematic because it interferes with the aesthetic goals of Asian gardens. This project created the first outdoor, location-aware mobile app using the Place-Sticker technology developed by Information Services International-Dentsu LTD, Tokyo, Japan (ISID). It continues the productive collaboration between Balboa Park Online Collaborative (BPOC), the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Japan, and the Pacific Rim Undergraduate Experience (PRIME) program at UCSD.

The JFG Haiku Hunt will give users a different type of experience in the Japanese Friendship Garden in San Diego. The app will serve as an interactive guide which takes users around the garden and teaches them the different elements of the garden. This project will be the first to use a new solar powered PlaceSticker prototype in an outdoor environment. This app was launched using Kickstarter and raised over $2500. Much of the content was made with the help of San Diego community so we felt it was natural to work together using Kickstarter to launch this project. We hope that you will have a chance to experience this adventure.
