  • WHY EXPATS CHOOSE SYDNEY?

It is not a secret: expats love Sydney and they choose this city to relocate when they come from abroad.
The reasons to appreciate this city are many.
Sydney is the most important city in Australia (but don't tell that to people from Melbourne - joke), even if it is not its capital. Beyond the fact that this means that more events, concerts and various shows are offered in Sydney, for me the most important fact to consider is that Sydney offers more work and growth opportunities. The major Australian and international companies are based in Sydney and this could facilitate a possible move from abroad.

Sydney offers many opportunities but life is laid back.
All public offices and most shops close at five in the afternoon or even before that, which leaves plenty of time for socializing, playing sports or just spending time with family.
Not only are working hours better and more flexible here, but free time to dedicate to family, friends and hobbies is considered an important value of Aussie life.

Sydney is carefree, free and open-minded. Unlike other cities like Perth and Adelaide, Sydney is truly forward-looking and gives spaces to innovation. It is open to novelties coming from other parts of the world and does everything possible to keep up with international competitors. Although Australia is decidedly isolated from the rest of the world and we often feel distant from some global events, among Australian cities Sydney is the one that in my opinion guarantees a greater connection with the rest of the planet, even if only in a figurative sense.

Another key point is that nature is an integral part of the city. For me, the most beautiful and unique aspect of Sydney is the accessibility of water practically everywhere: from the many metropolitan beaches, to the bay that winds towards the suburbs, to the various rivers that reach the suburbs.
Nature subsequently offers a more relaxed lifestyle. Coming from a busy city, which I have always hated for its hectic and stressful lifestyle, the first thing I appreciated about Australia is its more relaxed pace and its higher quality of life.

In Sydney, multiculturalism can be felt at every corner. With many minority and ethnic neighbourhoods, in Sydney you almost have to go looking for white Anglo-Saxons!
For me it is one of the city's greatest assets because it means having a variety of cultural events, cuisines and international and language exchanges.
Sydney is also very safe.
In Sydney anyone can easily walk around alone, day or night, on foot or by public transport.

Last but not least, the climate is gorgeous during the long spring and summer period and mild in winter. Located in a semi-tropical area, the humidity is higher than in other Australian cities of the south, but this also means that temperatures are pleasant all year round.
For those who don't like extreme temperatures and who dream of living most of the year wearing a t-shirt and flip flops, I would say that Sydney is truly ideal.

In conclusion, Sydney has absolutely nothing to envy other cities.
The quality of life is excellent, there are restaurants for all budgets and preferences, skyscrapers, immense parks, social life and beach life, good wine, great coffee, fantastic desserts and above all the people are relaxed as I mentioned.
All Australian cities are worth a visit but if I may say: Melbourne is cold and the weather is unpredictable, Adelaide is cute but offers few job opportunities, Brisbane is too tropical and surrounded by a lush nature which, at times, creates issues, Perth is too remote being the only big town on the West Coast. Canberra is the capital but it’s fairly small and uneventful.
Obviously, Sydney is not all perfect.
Perhaps another time I can mention the downsides as the high cost of living and the off the roof real estate prices but…that’s another story.

Hello everyone! I’m originally from Italy and I moved to Sydney, Australia, in 2012 after getting a job as a civil engineer. I love walking my dog along the beach, surfing and taking photos. I used to have a travel blog because I’m passionate about traveling and I love writing about it too. Sydney is my home base now and I wish to share how amazing it is to live here. I love to spend time outdoors and I’m always well informed about local events because my girlfriend works in event management.
