  • The digital world and a long-lasting lockdown
Although the lifting of the state of emergency is currently under discussion for Canada, in Ontario they have decided to extend the stay-at-home mandate to June 2nd.
This everlasting lockdown has been hard on Canadians and it has been eased only by a few things, for instance the use of apps and digital technology. From remote working to remote learning, the digital has proved to be the best way to adequately deal with the lockdown from many points of view.
In the past year and especially in the last two months, digital technology has been the undisputed protagonist of everyone's daily life. The lockdown has totally changed the way of working, communicating, even eating. From remote working to interactive games, from distance learning to online shopping, just to mention some aspects of the phenomenon, users have had to experiment and deal with new systems and applications, or at least significantly intensify their use.
In the workplace, remote working has proved to be the key to allow the continuation of a whole series of activities that would otherwise have been abruptly interrupted. The connection with colleagues and customers was made possible thanks to specific videoconferencing apps which in the last two months have registered dizzying growth rates and many Canadians have now decided to invest money on them.
The download of videoconferencing applications has grown strongly since the beginning of the year and reached saturation in a very short time, reaching a stabilization of active users on a monthly basis.
And it’s here to stay.
Many offices are considering the reduced costs of having employees working from home and they are considering converting their contracts to permanent remote working ones.
When it comes to shopping online, since the beginning of the year, the market had to adapt to drastic changes and strongly encourage online services, already partially present. This is the case of online shopping and apps for the purchase of food and basic necessities which have recorded a very strong increase in use and have become more user friendly.
Even small shops had to adhere to some kind of delivery service to be able to still sell their goods.
Whenever the shops are open it is also now possible to shop online and pick up the goods *therefore avoiding shipping fees* avoiding queues and at a safe distance: a way like any other to compensate for the drastic security measures required by the Government.

And for those who wanted to keep fit despite the closure of the gyms many apps for training at home have been created and have recorded a very important growth rate. In particular, yoga exercises are in great demand, which combine physical training with a strong meditative component, very useful for surviving the negative psychological implications coming from a forced cohabitation with relatives or roommates! Just kidding! But definitely useful to survive the negative psychological implications of these hard times.
Many gyms have personal trainers have gone online by creating an app or an Instagram page or a Youtube channel where to post live lessons, tips, plans, etc.

Digital technology during the Coronavirus emergency is hailed as a blessing by everyone, because it is truly at the service of the individual, allowing contacts, communication and operational opportunities that would otherwise be impossible to achieve. Even those who, until a few months ago complained of its excessive intrusiveness, today are forced to recognize a very high role at every existential level: from contacts between public and private to interpersonal contacts and support for essential needs, the best way to adequately address the lockdown and the difficult circumstances caused by the long-lasting lockdown.

HELLO! MY NAME IS PATRICK AND I LIVE IN EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND, WHERE I WORK AS A CIVIL ENGINEER AND I’M ALSO AN AMATEUR POET IN MY SPARE TIME. I MOVED TO SCOTLAND ABOUT 9 YEARS AGO FROM ITALY AND I FELL IN LOVE WITH IT. SOME PEOPLE DON’T LIKE THE RAINY WEATHER BUT IT’S THIS TYPE OF WEATHER WHICH ALLOWS THIS REGION TO BE SO LUSH AND GREEN. WHENEVER I HAVE THE CHANCE I TAKE MY CAR TO THE COUNTRYSIDE AND I GO EXPLORE THE MANY LAKES AND VALLEYS AROUND EDINBURGH.
