  • Not everyone (abroad) knows that …
1. Americans are very very hospitable people: let's say you find yourself on the street with a map in hand, intent on understanding which is the right way to the place you are looking for...it won't be long before someone approaches you asking if you need some help.
It's even likely that the friendly passer-by will not only explain the way to you but he/she will also decide to take you to your destination.
It happened many times to me: once a lady even gave me a ride home! In short, one of the most pleasant aspects of Americans is their hospitality, their simplicity and their ability to make you feel at home and at ease in their country. So if you get lost, you know what to do!

2. When it comes to shopping, prices can be tricky.
The prices displayed do not include sales taxes, so what you are seeing is not the actual final price.
The sale tax depends from State to State and they can range.
In America the sizes are not the same as in Europe and I suppose different from Japan too.
In Texas and the US, one can find super extra large sizes (up to 6XL or more) which I could never find back home. Supersize-me-style!
In various shoe shops you will find a series of painted foot prints on the floor to measure your foot and easily know your size.

3. Electrical power outlets in the United States are different from Europe and the voltage is different from Europe as well: it is 110 Volt.
You may find two types of sockets, quite similar to each other: the type A plug, with two parallel, thin blade-type output and the type B plug, which in addition to the two blade outlets also has a cylindrical earthing contact.

4. American coffee is as much a symbol of the country as hamburgers.
The normal coffee is filtered and far different from the Italian coffee I was used to but you can also easily find espresso.
Unlike espresso (which you drink in a second) American coffee is a drink to be savored and a drink to be carried with you and sipped for most of the day, in the car and at work.
Some say it is a scorching hot watered-down coffee without any flavor but it is not true as you can find some truly excellent blends and some gourmet cafes nowadays. Above all, it's about getting used to the new taste and following the local habit of taking it with you as a comfort food throughout the day.
Needless to say, in America it is popular to have coffee drinks with syrup, shakes, iced coffees and a variety of other drinks that do not even exist in the old continent.

5. Transportation is generally by car or by plane.
In the main American cities the subway works quite well, but if an area is not well covered by the subway you will have to use the bus, which is decidedly less reliable. The time slots are often reported vaguely and it may even happen that they are not strictly respected. Also remember that you must have the exact money for the ticket, otherwise no change is given.
The coach bus turns out to be a better choice for extra-urban trips from city to city but for long distance domestic travel Americans choose the plane.
The United States covers four time zones plus two more for Hawaii and Alaska.

6. America is a business friendly country from many points of view. Here, one can easily: create a new company, access new capital, hire new employees (but also fire them), and in this case we are not just talking about large companies, but this also applies to micro-businesses and freelancers.
This derives from the fact that the USA, the true homeland of capitalism, has the aim of helping companies to grow and produce more and more, establishing the conditions for a climate of healthy and perennial competitiveness.
This aspect is, in many ways, controversial, but it is what has made America the economic power it is today. As a consequence of this, the market itself also tends to be particularly receptive.
