After retiring from Osaka University, I worked for seven years as the head of Osaka University Bangkok Center for Education and Research (currently, Osaka University ASEAN Center for Academic Initiatives). From May 2014, I have been working at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi where the students call me, “Grandfather.” Please do not hesitate to contact me if there is a subject on Thailand you would like to know about.

  • I’ve been a little lax about posts, but will start posting again.The other day, the plane from Japan back to Bangkok passed through thunderclouds and shook violently just before arriving at Suvarnabhumi Airport. It was the first time in a long time that I’d experienced that kind of turbulence. When we somehow landed at the airport, it was pouring rain and it felt as if something were slipping. I thought, the plane’s not going to stop, and automatically pressed my feet firmly on the floor, though it’s not as if there were any brakes there.

  • Universities in Japan and Thailand (Part 1)
  • How many universities do you think Japan has? According to statistics from 2013, there are a total of 782 universities of which 86 are national universities, 90 are public universities, and 606 are private universities. When they are sorted by prefectures there are 139 universities in Tokyo, 56 in Osaka, and 52 in Aichi. Although Kyoto is often thought of as having the most universities, it places seventh with a total of 33 universities. Overall, the number of students in these universities comes to a total of 2,868,000 of which 614,000 attend national universities, 146,000 attend public universities, and 2,108,000 attend private universities.

  • Hello, I'm Seki reporting from Bangkok.
  • The dry season in Bangkok is coming to an end, and the temperature is rising with an ongoing heat wave producing temperatures around 37°C.April 2nd was the 60th birthday of Her Royal Highness Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, the second daughter to the king. Purple is the color of Saturday and the Princess’s color because she was born on a Saturday. The Princess’ flag was flown and many people wore purple shirts throughout the city, showing how much the Princess is loved by the people. She possesses honorary doctorates from Gakushuin University and Tokai University, and is a great Japanophile. The other day, she visited Japan.
