IMPETUS AND MOVEMENT

When objects move, there is an impetus, a force that creates the motion.
The force resides in natural phenomena such as river currents, wind flows as well as various technologies developed by humans.

This exhibition showcases works that approach impetus and movements in artistic and scientific ways: Chiji-ki by Nero Akamatsu demonstrates Chijiki (Japanese for ‘the imperceptible power of the geomagnetic field’) with wooden rings slowly moving by the force. From Yasuaki Kakehi Laboratory, Keio University, magnetic forces control worm-like Loopers, soap bubbles act as electric switches in Iridescent Circuit, and BelliesWave offers a unique tangible display. Furnished Fluid #2 by Akira Wakita visualizes unseen airflow surrounding objects in an elaborative manner.

The works let us understand how artists are inspired by movement in nature, in ordinary objects, and in technologies. Visitors can experience how they transformed invisible forces into something that we can touch and feel.

What is ARS ELECTRONICA?

Ars Electronica is a cultural institute for media arts, located in Linz, Austria. The Ars Electronica is consisted of 4 departments of “Ars Electronica Festival” for art, technology and society held in every September,“Ars Electronica Center” as museum of the future, “Prix Ars Electronica” international completion for media arts and “Ars Electronica Futurelab” as R&D function. Also many Japanese creators participates in their activities.

Participating artists

赤松音呂

Nelo Akamatsu creates art works across several media such as installations with electric devices, event installations, video installations, sculptures, paintings and photos. He explores rhythms created between inhomogeneous objects and issues, rhythms of biological cells, stock exchange, human biorhythm, etc. He won the Golden Nica award (first place) in the Digital Musics & Sound Art category of Prix Ars Electronica (2015) with Chijikinkutsu, which visibly and audibly expressed geomagnetic forces combining with traditional Japanese gardening features.

Yasuaki Kakehi

Yasuaki Kakehi is a media artist and interactive media researcher. His works uniquely combine digital technologies and material characteristics. Worm-like deforming objects made by aligned sphere-shaped magnets, soap bubble switches, tangible pixels with color-changing balloons, he and his students developed a variety of interactive projects. Associate Professor of Environment and Information Studies, Keio University and Visiting Associate Professor at MIT Media Lab. He also works at plaplax co., ltd., media artists unit.

脇 田 玲

Akira Wakita is an artist and engineer who develops media and interfaces that enable humans to physically sense (touch, see, hear) invisible information hidden in the natural environment around us. He explores a new way of looking at the world throughout his works. His recent works focus on fluid-dynamic and thermodynamic models, and the visualization created by his original software successfully bridges the gap between science and art. He is also a professor of Environment and Information Studies at Keio University.

day3 8/20(sat) 14:00~ 慶應義塾大学 筧康明研究室「Animated Drawing」ワークショップ

In this workshop, participants will create original interactive animation “Animated Drawing” utilizing a combination of sensors and induction actuators. Facilitators will guide the exciting process to set physical material in motion, and help you explore the expressive use of it. Experience and learn the infinite possibilities of interactively communicating with material.
