  • A Wonderful Riverside Restaurant
In this article I’d like to tell you about Tweed River House, a stylish restaurant situated on a riverbank in Murwillumbah, a small town about an hour’s drive south from the Gold Coast. Although well-known to connoisseurs and well-loved the locals, I’m sure it doesn’t yet appear in the guidebooks on Australia. The interior design and the location are both really lovely, so I occasionally go there for friends’ birthday lunches and so on.
The restaurant is a renovated historical house built more than 100 years ago and won a 2024 Australian Good Food Guide Award.
From the riverside terrace, you can see panoramic vistas, including Mt. Warning, a landmark representative of Murwillumbah.
Actually, this whole area has been damaged by flooding in the past time and again, and the restaurant too has survived flood damage on numerous occasions. Twenty years ago, there was a flood so big that everything in the storeroom underneath was washed away, even an ice chest weighing 300 kg. Luckily the main part of the restaurant is on the second floor and managed to avoid damage as the second floor was not badly damaged by the flood.
It did suffer quite a bit of damage in financial terms but managed to get through and recover thanks to the help of volunteers and disaster relief assistance from the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

The restaurant is of course renowned for its delicious food, but also for its stylish interior design and decoration. They have used the original old window frames and stained glass and decorated the walls with art and paintings by local artists to achieve a nice mix of modern tastes with a classic, antique feel. It also has a touch of tropical resort esthetic, like palm tree paintings and rattan furniture, which produce an atmosphere that perfectly suits this stylish small town.

There is a private dining room decorated with a large chandelier right at the entrance to the restaurant.

They serve seasonal menus featuring fresh seafood caught in the local waters and the Tweed River, as well as locally grown fruits and vegetables. Although there are few dishes to choose from, they change with the seasons, so you get to eat different things even if you go there often, which is nice.
On this occasion we had the course menu, but each of us 4 friends managed to order a different main course, so we got to see a variety of dishes.
A good restaurant also provides high-quality hospitality (customer service), so you can have a nice, leisurely, and pleasant time.
We had a late lunch on the terrace, which went on for quite a while, so the sky eventually filled with the colors of dusk. We had a very special time as we admired the view of Mt. Warning standing out in the orange light.

The most pointed peak, right in the middle, is Mt. Warning, although you can see it more clearly with the naked eye.

While urban development is advancing on the Gold Coast, filling it with high-rise buildings and new construction, the architecture from the good old days is rapidly disappearing, which I find sad. When I occasionally go on a trip a little far from home and I’m in a fabulous restaurant like this in this lovely town, I feel as though time has stopped.
I’d love to show you all the many photos I took inside the restaurant, but I’ve only shown a few here because I really hope you go and actually see it for yourself, if you get the opportunity.
I’d like to tell you from time to time about the lovely towns, restaurants, and so on outside the Gold Coast, on the outskirts.
