  • Heartfelt exchange through calligraphy at the Sydney Sake Festival
  • The other day, I participated in the Sake Festival in Sydney at a calligraphy workshop booth. The theme was “experiencing Japanese culture with the heart”. I had visitors to my booth draw an “enso,” a Zen circle penned with a continuous stroke, on a paper fan. I would then add a character of their choosing using an improvised design.

  • A birthday party during class
  • Let me tell you a little about the language school I go to. I’m currently living as a student in Sydney while I keep up my calligraphy activities. From Monday to Thursday, I take English classes all day, from morning until three in the afternoon. That said, my school doesn’t have the stiff, formal feel of a university. The classroom is always warm, laid back, and full of smiles.

  • Luna Park is located in a beautiful seaside area in Sydney. You can see the huge face on the gate from your window if you take a train north out of the city. I love the way it looks in the daytime, surrounded by the blue water and blue sky—and the enchanting way it magically lights up at night.

  • Easter isn’t something most Japanese people are familiar with, but it’s a very important holiday here in Australia. Christianity has deep roots here, making Easter a major event on par with Christmas. I spent my first Easter in Sydney, and there was no end to the surprising differences with Japan.

  • A free yoga class in Sydney
  • Would you try out a yoga class if it were free? You might be suspicious when you hear they’re not charging—like maybe they’ll force you to buy something or put you through a sales pitch. To put your mind at ease, you’d need to do some research on the organization or school that’s offering the free product or service. There’s always a reason something is free, but once you know what it is, you can confidently go in and take the class.
