Professor, Monash University

PhD (Caltech), 2006. After a postdoctoral appointment at Caltech, returned to Japan in 2010 with JST PRESTO funding. Joined Monash University as an Associate Professor in January 2012 (promoted to Professor in 2020) and held an ARC Future Fellowship from 2013 to 2017. Research focuses on uncovering the neural basis of consciousness, with recent emphasis on a novel “qualia structure” approach that characterises the structure of qualia through large-scale similarity measurements and links it to neural correlates and informational structures. This interdisciplinary program—drawing on phenomenology, developmental studies, and constructivist approaches—aims to estimate qualia structures spanning perception to emotion, with broad societal impact on understanding other minds, animal consciousness, and AI.
